What is static electricity?

All materials contain positive and negative charges in equal amounts. These opposite charges are usually perfectly balanced. If this is not the case, we can talk about static electricity.

Static electricity is an invisible force which may cause considerable trouble. Apart from getting a sudden shock when touching a door knob or a banister, static electricity is hardly noticed in everyday life. However, in industrial processes this invisible force may cause major problems. It may even completely stop production processes or cause irreparable damage when electronic components are being processed. Another inconvenient truth is dust attraction.

But on the other side, static electricity may also be very helpful, for instance when two plastic sheets have to stick together during production.
