Technidyne laboratory services (21-08-2009)

The Technidyne Laboratory Services (TLS) group is the leading provider of ISO Level III optical property calibration standards in the world. It is one of only five Authorized Laboratories entrusted with this task. Therefore it is imperative that this facility be maintained with the best equipment and technical capabilities available.

The goal of this laboratory is to provide the worldwide paper industry with the correct calibration tools, so that critical measurements, such as color and brightness, are stable and consistent from month to month, year to year and mill to mill, worldwide. This brings you immediate cost savings when controlling your process.

TLS can provide you with:
• Calibration standards and tools
• Contract testing for special projects and intermittent needs
• Round-robin testing programs
• Traceability documents to meet your Quality Program demands and certifications

TLS offers your mill unique capabilities and opportunities to evaluate your products and ensure that your in-house testing program is properly calibrated and prepared to provide accurate and precise data.

New AATCC TM 195 method quantifies moisture management properties for performance fabrics (22-07-2009)

A new test method for measuring the moisture handling properties of performance fabrics for active wear and other apparel has earned approval from the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) after a lengthy review. The Moisture Management Tester (MMT) plays a key role in the new protocol.

Recent studies have revealed that for most active wear purchasers, the comfort of their apparel’s fabric is closely linked to its ability to handle moisture such as perspiration. Researchers have been seeking to develop a means for objectively measuring and documenting comfort levels and moisture handling. The newly adopted AATCC TM 195 test method and MMT promise a step forward.

The AATCC approval process is important for new technology. On any proposed test method, every objection and negative are carefully considered by committee members. Complete agreement is required before a method can advance to publication. Copies of AATCC TM 195 may be ordered from www.aatcc.org.

More than 40 of the desk-top MMT units are currently used by laboratories in Asia, Europe and the Americas, said Robert Lattie, Director, Product Management at SDL Atlas. The unit dynamically measures liquid transfer behavior in knitted, woven and non-woven textile fabrics using upper and lower concentric moisture sensors. It generates six key indexes and a quantifiable one-way moisture movement index value.

This new dynamic unit can demonstrate the ability of a fabric to improve apparel comfort. The MMT is recognized and used for both R&D and quality control by a growing number of sportswear and performance fabric manufacturers serving this critically important segment

Custom Abradants Taber (13-07-2009)

You might be familiar with the popular children's story Goldilocks. Goldilocks whined about one solution being too hard, another too soft and did not rest until she found a solution that was 'just right'. Maybe you have a customer in a similar situation - one abradant is too harsh, another too 'mild' - they need an abradant that is 'just right'. Have you suggested a custom Taber abradant?

Taber offers an extensive range of abradants for the Taber Rotary Abraser, Linear Abraser, Reciprocating Abraser and Oscillating Abrasion tester. This year, two new abradants were added to the Taber line: the CS-2 and CS-8 Wearasers. But where did these new abradants come from? Requests for 'custom abradants'!

Taber was approached by a manufacturer of children's toys. Young children may cause all sorts of wear, tear and abuse but have a relatively light touch and so the 'no abrasive'  CS-2 Wearaser was created.  The CS-8 Wearaseraddressed the need of another customer for an even finer abradant than the CS-10 Wearaser.  These are just two examples of a custom formulation that fit a niche so successfully that they became a standard product offering!

Taber also can provide abradants in unique custom shapes: a rectangular block with a diamond pattern created for experiments with a scrub tester; a cylindrical abrasive puck produced for a customer requiring a large surface contact; a custom length Wearaser, over 2 inches long.
