Lansmont assures safe transport of space shuttle reusable solid rocket motor!
The Space Shuttle uses two reusable solid rocket motors (RSRM), each producing 15 million horsepower at liftoff in an effort to push the shuttle and its external tank to an orbit of 150,000 feet and a speed in excess of 3,000 mph before they
separate and start their return to earth, via an ocean touchdown. Yet, before the most powerful solid-propellant motors that have ever flown leave the ground, they travel a couple thousand miles on the ground.
The RSRM’s consist of four rocket motor segments, all of which are manufactured at Alliant Techsystems, Inc. (ATK) at their Wasatch Division in Utah. These assemblies are eventually transported via specialized rail equipment to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where they’re assembled and configured for flight operations.
Safe and secure transport of these mission-critical components is of utmost importance. Lansmont instruments were a perfect fit for a job of this magnitude. Stringent quality requirements dictated that Lansmont thoroughly prove instrument accuracy, reliability and repeatability prior to being approved for this critical application. that our SAVER 3X90 instruments will now be used in the overall effort to assure the Space Shuttle flies safely. As the Shuttle nears its 2010 retirement, Lansmont instruments will continue to assure the safe transport of NASA’s new Ares Launch Vehicles. The Ares spacecraft will eventually return man to the moon, and later even to Mars.
